About this Recipe

Tired of bland, store-bought green enchilada sauce? This quick and simple homemade Green Enchilada Sauce recipe delivers vibrant, authentic flavor that will transform your Mexican-inspired dishes.

Why This Recipe Works

This recipe shines because it delivers the depth of flavor you'd expect from a simmered sauce, all while being incredibly efficient. By leveraging readily available canned or frozen green chiles (and crucially, not draining them!), you save significant prep time without sacrificing that essential tangy, earthy chile foundation. The simple combination of aromatic onion and garlic, balanced with savory vegetable broth, cumin, and oregano, builds a robust base that’s far superior to anything from a can.

What to Expect

You can expect a smooth, flavorful sauce with a harmonious blend of savory, slightly tangy, and earthy notes. The green chiles provide a mild, verdant backbone, while the cumin and oregano impart a warm, aromatic character. It's designed to be a versatile workhorse in your kitchen, delivering a fresh, homemade taste that feels both comforting and elevated. The texture is perfect for coating enchiladas or simmering with other ingredients, making it an indispensable part of your culinary repertoire.

Customization & Variations

This Green Enchilada Sauce is highly adaptable. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, incorporating the optional diced jalapeno pepper adds a welcome kick. If you don't have avocado oil on hand, olive oil works perfectly as a substitute. Similarly, feel free to use chicken broth instead of vegetable broth, depending on what you have in your pantry or your preference for a richer flavor.

Serving & Context

This homemade green enchilada sauce is the ideal foundation for classic enchiladas, burritos, or casseroles, making it perfect for both everyday weeknight meals and special gatherings. It promises to bring a fresh, zesty homemade touch to any dish.
