About this Recipe
Craving a deeply comforting, hearty meal that practically makes itself? This Ham and Bean Soup recipe leverages your leftover ham bone and the magic of the Instant Pot to create a rich, flavorful soup that tastes like it simmered all day. It's the perfect way to turn holiday leftovers into a brand new, incredibly satisfying dish.
Why This Soup is a Must-Make
The secret to this incredibly delicious ham and bean soup lies in utilizing a ham hock or ham bone with meat attached. This crucial ingredient slowly releases its savory essence into the broth, creating an unparalleled depth of flavor that a simple cube of ham can't replicate. The Instant Pot ensures that both the dried beans and the ham become wonderfully tender in a fraction of the time, fusing all those rich flavors into a cohesive, comforting experience.
Get ready for a bowl of pure comfort. You'll experience the rich, savory aroma filling your kitchen as this soup cooks. Each spoonful delivers tender, creamy beans, succulent pieces of ham, and a medley of perfectly cooked diced carrots, celery, and onion, all swimming in a deeply flavorful, aromatic broth seasoned with bay leaves, thyme, and cumin. It's a remarkably balanced dish that feels both wholesome and incredibly indulgent, perfect for warming you from the inside out.
Customization & Variations
This recipe offers great flexibility. You can easily adapt the bean choice, opting for either Navy beans or Pinto beans based on your preference or what's in your pantry. For a less intense ham flavor, you could use a smaller ham bone or trim some of the excess fat before cooking. If you have extra cooked ham meat, you can shred it and add it at the very end to boost the meatiness.
This robust soup is a complete meal on its own, making it ideal for a cozy family dinner on a chilly evening. Serve it simply with a side of crusty bread for dipping into the rich broth, or a light green salad to complement its heartiness. It's a truly satisfying dish that brings warmth and flavor to any table.
