MY GRANNY’S COCOA CREAM PIE
Ingredients
- ½ c. cocoa
- 1/2 cup Flour
or 1/4 c. cornstarch
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 c. sugar
- ¼ tsp. salt
- 2 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 Pre-baked pie crust
Directions
- 1
Mix cocoa, cornstarch, sugar, and salt, then add milk gradually, add in the beaten egg yolks while stirring in a pot over medium to medium-high heat on your stovetop.
- 2
Cook until thick, whisking it until smooth. Don't stop stirring or leave the pot until it's nice and thick like pudding.

Cream Pies take some time to thicken, so stir for (5-10 minutes or until thickened). Using a heavy bottom pan really helps. Just keep it up until it thickens, add vanilla in after you take the pan off the heat and 1 Tbs of butter. Pour into a pre-baked pie shell. Put in the fridge to chill, and add whipped cream if you like. Or use the leftover egg whites for a meringue topping! Watch the video if you are having any trouble.

About this Recipe
Longing for that familiar, comforting taste of holiday gatherings? My Granny's Cocoa Cream Pie is a cherished holiday treat that brings back warm memories and creates new ones, offering a slice of pure joy to your table. This beloved family recipe is so delightfully easy to whip up, you’ll want to make it a tradition year-round.
Why This Pie Works
This recipe shines through its simple elegance and deeply satisfying flavor. The secret lies in creating an incredibly creamy cocoa filling that's both rich and smooth, providing that luscious, melt-in-your-mouth experience everyone craves. Designed to be a breeze to prepare, it takes the stress out of holiday baking while still delivering a dessert that feels truly special.
What to Expect
Prepare for a decadent and velvety chocolate experience with every forkful. The filling, crafted from cocoa, sugar, milk, and egg yolks, comes together to form a sweet, luxurious foundation. When paired with a tender, flaky pre-baked pie crust, you’re treated to a delightful contrast of textures: a sturdy base giving way to a silken, deeply flavorful cream that defines comfort dessert.
Customization & Variations
While this pie is perfect as is, you have options to tailor it to your preferences. The recipe conveniently allows for using either flour or cornstarch for the filling, giving you flexibility based on what's in your pantry. For a different textural experience, consider using a graham cracker crust instead of a traditional pastry. If you're looking to deepen the chocolate notes even further, a very small pinch of espresso powder can enhance the cocoa without adding a coffee flavor.
Serving & Context
This timeless dessert is a centerpiece for holiday gatherings, but it’s equally wonderful for any occasion that calls for a comforting sweet treat. Serve it chilled, perhaps garnished with a sprinkle of cocoa powder or a dollop of fresh whipped cream for an extra touch of indulgence.
