Ingredients

  • 1 cupwarm water (100 to 110 degrees fahrenheit)
  • 1 tablespooninstant dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoonsgranulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoonsalt
  • 3 tablespoonsolive oil
  • 2 ½ cupsall-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoonssalted butter (melted)
  • ¼ teaspoonsalt
  • ¼ teaspoongarlic powder
  • 1 tablespoongrated parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 teaspoonitalian seasoning (optional)

Directions

  1. 1

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm water, yeast, sugar, salt, and olive oil. Stir briefly to combine.

  2. 2

Add 2 cups of flour to the bowl. Using a dough hook attachment, start the mixer on low speed until the flour begins to incorporate. Increase to medium speed and slowly add the remaining ½ cup of flour. Continue mixing, adding more flour as needed, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky but not adhere to your hands.

  3. 3

Transfer the dough to a lightly greased mixing bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.

  4. 4

Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a rope 9–10 inches long and place them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet. Cover loosely with the towel and let rise for 20 minutes while preheating the oven.

  5. 5

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Bake the breadsticks for 16–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

  6. 6

While the breadsticks are baking, whisk together the melted butter, salt, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Brush the mixture over the breadsticks immediately after they come out of the oven. If desired, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese or Italian seasoning while the butter is still warm for additional flavor.
