  • ⅛ teaspoonground cloves
  • ⅛ teaspoonsmoked paprika

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 300°F and position oven racks to cook the ham in the second lowest rack position.

  2. 2

Line a roasting pan or large Dutch oven with one large piece of foil.

  3. 3

Place the ham in the center of the pan on the foil flat-side down

  4. 4

Combine the honey, butter, and garlic in a small bowl.

  5. 5

Rub the ham with this mixture, working some between the slices if possible.

  6. 6

Bring the sides of the foil up and over the ham to loosely cover.

  7. 7

Bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  8. 8

At the 1 hour and 15-minute mark, combine the sugar, salt, onion powder, and spices in a small bowl.

  9. 9

Uncover the ham and pat half of the sugar mixture over the ham after the hour and a half is up. Also, reserve about ¼ cup of the ham juices collected at the bottom of the pan.

Broil the ham uncovered for 5-7 minutes or until it develops a crispy, crackly exterior.

Meanwhile, add 3 tablespoons of the reserved ham juice to a small saucepan with the remaining sugar and seasoning mixture.

Bring to a boil and keep at a rolling boil for 1 minute. This is the glaze.

  13. 13

Pour the glaze over the ham (or brush it on for a lighter coat), then broil for 1-2 more minutes to caramelize.

  14. 14

Rest for 10 minutes, then slice and serve.
