Southern Buttermilk Pie

This old-fashioned Southern Buttermilk Pie deserves a second look. Learn how to make one of our favorite forgotten pies of the South, and surprise folks when you tell them the ingredient that makes it so rich and creamy.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • .5 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon loosely packed lemon zest
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Perfect Pie Crust
  • Garnishes: fresh berries, whipped cream, fresh mint

Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk together first 2 ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk eggs and next 5 ingredients into flour mixture. Pour into Perfect Pie Crust .

    Bake at 350°F for 35 to 45 minutes or until almost set, shielding edges with aluminum foil after 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and cool 1 hour.
