Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch or all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Coarse sugar for sprinkling on top

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and cornstarch until evenly coated. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.

  3. 3

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla until just combined. Do not overmix.

  4. 4

Dollop the batter evenly over the apple filling. Sprinkle the top generously with coarse sugar.

  5. 5

Bake for 45-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly. Cover loosely with foil during the last 10-15 minutes if the top browns too quickly.

  6. 6

Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
