Baked Apples

4 servings
Classic baked apples are an easy, comforting dessert filled with pecans, cinnamon, raisins, butter, and brown sugar.

Ingredients

  • good baking apples

such as rome beauty, golden delicious, or jonagold

    4 large
  • brown sugar
    ¼ c
  • cinnamon
    1 tsp
  • chopped pecans

    optional

    ¼ c
  • currants or chopped raisins
    ¼ c
  • butter
    1 tbsp
  • boiling water
    ¾ c

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 2

Cut out holes in apples for stuffing: Rinse and dry the apples. Using a sharp paring knife or an apple corer , cut out the cores, leaving the bottom 1/2 inch of the apples intact. If using a paring knife, first cut out the stem area and then use a small metal spoon to scoop out the seeds. Cut the holes so that they are an inch or so wide.

    Step 2
  3. 3

Stuff apples, then, dot with butter: Place the brown sugar, cinnamon, currants or chopped raisins, and chopped pecans (if using) in a small bowl and stir to combine. Put the apples in a baking dish and stuff each apple with the sugar stuffing mixture. Place a dot of butter (a quarter of the tablespoon called for in the ingredient list) on top of the sugar.

    Step 3
  4. 4

Bake until tender: Pour the boiling water into the bottom of the baking dish. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 30 to 45 minutes, until the apples are cooked through and tender, but not overcooked and mushy. When done, remove the apples from the oven and baste them with the juices from the pan. Terrific with a side of vanilla ice cream. Did you enjoy this recipe? Let us know with a rating and review!

About this Recipe

Craving a dessert that wraps you in warmth and nostalgia? These classic Baked Apples deliver a comforting, sweet experience with every tender bite, proving that sometimes, the simplest things are the best. They’re a beloved comfort food, perfect for any occasion.

Why does this recipe work so well? It’s all about the timeless combination of sweet, spiced apples and a rich, nutty filling. The natural sweetness of the apples is enhanced by brown sugar and cinnamon, while the pecans and raisins add delightful texture and bursts of flavor, creating a dessert that feels both wholesome and indulgent.

Expect a dessert that truly hits the spot, especially when the weather turns cooler. Each apple emerges from the oven beautifully softened, its core filled with a fragrant mixture of rich brown sugar, aromatic cinnamon, crunchy pecans, and juicy raisins. The butter melts into the filling, creating a luscious sauce that permeates the tender apple flesh. This isn't just a dessert; it’s an experience – warm, sweet, and incredibly satisfying, evoking memories of cozy kitchens and fall days. This naturally gluten-free dish is a delightful way to enjoy the season's bounty.

Feel free to make these your own. Swap the pecans for walnuts or omit them entirely if you prefer. Instead of raisins, dried cranberries or chopped dates would also be delicious. While the recipe suggests Rome Beauty, Golden Delicious, or Jonagold, you can experiment with other good baking apples that hold their shape well. For an extra hint of warmth, a pinch of nutmeg or allspice can be added to the cinnamon mixture.

These Baked Apples are ideal for a cozy family dinner or a relaxed gathering with friends. Serve them warm, perhaps alongside a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra touch of decadence. They make a fantastic dessert centerpiece for a fall feast.
