Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar

Brew the espresso and let it cool slightly.

  3. 3

Add ice to a rocks glass and top with the bourbon, syrup, espresso, and bitters.

    Stir to combine.

  5. 5

Garnish with shaved chocolate and 3 espresso beans.

About this Recipe

Tired of the usual espresso martini? Elevate your evening with this sophisticated Bourbon Espresso Old Fashioned, a truly exceptional cocktail that delivers a richer, more complex flavor experience.

This recipe shines by expertly balancing the robust intensity of freshly brewed espresso with the nuanced sweetness of bourbon. Enhanced by a homemade brown sugar syrup and a subtle hint of chocolate bitters, it creates a harmonious blend that offers a deep, satisfying profile unlike any other espresso drink.

Prepare for a remarkably smooth and deeply flavorful beverage. You'll savor how the sweet caramel notes of brown sugar syrup intertwine beautifully with the woody undertones of bourbon, all grounded by the bold bitterness of espresso. The subtle finish of chocolate bitters adds an unexpected layer of depth, creating a truly satisfying sip. Best of all, this sophisticated drink comes together quickly, promising a moment of indulgence in just five minutes.

For a different nuance, experiment with various bourbon profiles—a high-rye bourbon will add a spicier kick, while a wheated bourbon will lean softer and sweeter. While freshly brewed espresso is key to the drink's character, you could vary the roast type for different intensity. Don't have chocolate bitters on hand? Orange bitters offer a classic Old Fashioned twist that complements bourbon beautifully.

This elegant cocktail is ideal for winding down an evening, serving as a sophisticated after-dinner drink, or impressing guests with a unique and flavorful creation.
