6 servings
This rich and creamy cheese sauce recipe is the perfect choice for dipping frrench fries! It also goes great with onion rings, chips, chicken tenders, and more! It's so much better than what you'd get in a jar from the store and is simple to make.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • ½ cup whole milk

    plus 2-3 tablespoons as needed

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • 4 ounces medium cheddar cheese

    freshly shredded

  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce

    such as Frank’s

Directions

  1. 1

Add the butter to a small saucepan over medium heat and melt. Whisk in the flour to form a paste and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring often to avoid burning.

  2. 2

Add ½ cup of milk to the flour mixture and whisk constantly until the mixture has thickened up to the consistency of a gravy. Whisk in the garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard powder.

  3. 3

Remove the pan from the heat and add the shredded cheese one handful at a time, stirring with each handful, until smooth and melted.

  4. 4

If necessary, return the pan to low heat to completely melt the cheese, but do not cook the cheese sauce for longer than necessary or it may become grainy. Add milk one tablespoon at a time to reach your desired thickness, keeping in mind the sauce will thicken the more it cools.

  5. 5

Stir in the hot sauce and serve warm.

About this Recipe

Craving that perfectly rich and velvety cheese sauce you get at your favorite diner, but tired of bland, store-bought jars? This homemade cheese sauce for fries recipe delivers authentic, creamy goodness that elevates any snack time into an indulgent treat.

Why This Sauce Works

What sets this cheese sauce apart is its incredible depth of flavor and luscious texture. By building a foundation with butter and flour, then incorporating whole milk, you create a smooth, rich base. The combination of freshly shredded medium cheddar with garlic powder, onion powder, and ground mustard ensures a complex, savory profile that’s far superior to processed alternatives, all finished with a hint of warmth from hot sauce.

What to Expect

Prepare for a cheese sauce that’s wonderfully thick, smooth, and intensely cheesy, with a savory kick that tantalizes the taste buds. It’s designed to cling perfectly to crispy fries, creating an irresistible bite every time. The hint of hot sauce provides a subtle warmth without overpowering the rich cheese flavor, making it incredibly satisfying. Despite its gourmet taste, this sauce is surprisingly simple to whip up, taking just minutes from start to finish.

Customization & Variations

This versatile cheese sauce welcomes your personal touch! For a sharper flavor, swap the medium cheddar for sharp cheddar or even a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack. If you prefer more heat, don't hesitate to increase the amount of hot sauce or add a pinch of cayenne pepper. For a milder profile, you can omit the hot sauce entirely. Feel free to experiment with other spices like a touch of smoked paprika for an earthy note.

Serving & Context

This rich and creamy cheese sauce is the ultimate companion for your golden-brown french fries, transforming a simple side into a star. But its versatility doesn't stop there—it's equally fantastic for dipping crunchy onion rings, tortilla chips, or juicy chicken tenders. It’s perfect for casual gatherings, game day snacks, or simply elevating your weeknight comfort food.
