Directions
- 1
Arrange a rack in center of oven; preheat to 375°. Cut out 4 (12" x 12") squares of foil.
- 2
In a small bowl, mix butter, paprika, garlic powder, salt, Old Bay, thyme, and pepper until smooth.

Trim onions at root and stem ends so onions sit flat on a work surface; peel onions. Using a small sharp knife, cut out center core from the top of each onion, leaving the bottom third of core intact (the cut-out center should be about 1/2" wide). Score top of onions in a cross pattern, cutting about 1" deep.

Stuff about 2 tsp. seasoned butter into center of each onion, then spread 4 tsp. seasoned butter on top of each; reserve remaining butter for serving.
- 5
Place an onion in the center of a foil square. Carefully fold up foil to enclose each onion and crease at the top to seal as tightly as possible. Arrange on an unlined baking sheet.
- 6
Bake onions until tender in the center, 55 to 65 minutes. Let cool 2 minutes before opening. Baste with reserved seasoned butter. Top with parsley (if using).

About this Recipe
The Viral TikTok Onion Boil: Your New Favorite Comfort Food
Get ready to experience the Onion Boil, a delicious dish that took TikTok by storm and is about to become your go-to vegetarian comfort food! This incredibly simple yet profoundly satisfying recipe transforms humble sweet onions into a meltingly tender, flavor-packed sensation. It’s perfect as a cozy winter snack or a unique side dish that will impress everyone.
What makes this roasted onion dish so special? It starts with large, naturally sweet onions, preferably varieties like Vidalia. These are carefully cored and then generously stuffed with a rich, savory butter mixture. We're talking about a powerhouse blend featuring paprika, garlic powder, classic Old Bay seasoning, dried thyme, and a good kick of salt and pepper. As the onions slowly roast, that aromatic butter permeates every layer, turning the onion into a soft, almost custardy delight that practically melts in your mouth. The result is an unbelievably flavorful, tender, and deeply aromatic Onion Boil that’s truly something to behold.
Tips for the Perfect Roasted Sweet Onion
- Choose Your Onions Wisely: While any large yellow onion works, using sweet onions like Vidalia, Walla Walla, or other sweet varieties will yield the best results, enhancing the dish's natural sweetness and tenderness.
- Customize Your Savory Butter: Feel free to get creative with the butter stuffing! You can add a pinch of chili flakes for heat, a dash of smoked paprika for depth, or even finely chopped fresh rosemary for an herbaceous twist. This butter is key to the "boil" flavor, infusing the onion with incredible richness.
- Serving Suggestions: This tender roasted onion is fantastic on its own, but it truly shines when paired with crusty bread for dipping into the flavorful buttery juices. It also makes an excellent vegetarian snack or a luxurious side dish alongside a hearty meal. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley for a burst of color and freshness! This easy pantry recipe proves that simple ingredients can create extraordinary flavor.
