About this Recipe
The Best Old Fashioned Potato Salad Recipe
There’s nothing quite like a classic old fashioned potato salad, truly "just like mom used to make!" This incredibly tangy and creamy potato salad recipe is the quintessential side dish for any summer gathering, backyard barbecue, or picnic. Forget bland, watery versions – our recipe delivers that nostalgic flavor profile you crave, perfectly balancing zesty vinegar with rich mayonnaise and a delightful crunch.
What makes this potato salad so special? It starts with perfectly cooked potatoes, seasoned while warm with a generous splash of white vinegar, allowing them to absorb that irresistible tang. We then fold in chopped hard-boiled eggs for added richness, crisp celery, and sweet onion for texture, all bound together by a creamy, savory dressing. The secret ingredient that really ties it all together is the celery seed, which provides that authentic, beloved potato salad flavor.
Tips for Making the Best Potato Salad:
- Choose Your Spuds Wisely: While russets are traditional and give a wonderfully creamy texture, Yukon Gold potatoes also work great. The key is to cook them until tender but not mushy.
- Season While Warm: Don't skip seasoning the warm potatoes with salt and vinegar. This step is crucial for infusing flavor deep into every bite.
- Chill for Flavor: While tempting to dive right in, allow your finished potato salad to chill for at least an hour (or even better, overnight) in the refrigerator. This gives all those wonderful flavors time to meld together beautifully.
This creamy potato salad is an absolute crowd-pleaser and the ultimate companion to grilled chicken, juicy burgers, or smoky ribs. If you're wondering how to make potato salad that will be the star of your next cookout, look no further!
