Spam Musubi Bake: A Delicious Twist on Tradition!
Ingredients
- 2 csushi rice
- 2 ½ cwater
- ¼ crice vinegar
- 2 tbspsugar
- 1 tspsalt
- 8 ozspam
sliced into 1/4-inch pieces
- 1 tbspsoy sauce
- 1 tbspmirin
optional
- 1 tbspvegetable oil
- 4sheets nori
cut into strips
- ¼ cgreen onions
chopped
- sesame seeds for garnish
optional
Directions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes.
- 2
In a small bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the cooked rice, ensuring it’s evenly coated. Allow the rice to cool slightly.
- 3
While the rice cools, heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced Spam and cook until browned and crispy on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drizzle the soy sauce and mirin over the Spam during the last minute of cooking, allowing it to caramelize slightly.
- 4
In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spread half of the sushi rice evenly across the bottom. Layer the cooked Spam on top, followed by the remaining sushi rice, pressing down gently to pack it.
- 5
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until heated through. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes.
- 6
Cut into squares or rectangles and serve warm, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired.

About this Recipe
Craving the savory goodness of Spam musubi but looking for a convenient, shareable twist? This Spam Musubi Bake offers all the classic flavors you love, reimagined into an easy-to-serve main dish.
Why This Recipe Works
This recipe shines by transforming a beloved handheld snack into a hearty, baked casserole. Layering seasoned sushi rice with perfectly glazed Spam, then baking it, creates a satisfying texture contrast. The oven gently melds the flavors, making for a less hands-on approach than individual musubis while still delivering that iconic Hawaiian-inspired taste.
What to Expect
Prepare yourself for a delightful balance of savory, sweet, and umami. You'll find a firm, subtly tangy sushi rice base, topped with tender Spam slices that are kissed with soy sauce and mirin. The strips of nori weave through the dish, adding a delicate oceanic note, while a sprinkle of fresh green onions and sesame seeds provides a burst of freshness and a hint of nutty crunch. It's comfort food at its best, perfect for feeding a crowd or enjoying as a unique family meal.
Customization & Variations
Feel free to adapt this bake to your pantry or preferences. While Spam is traditional, you could try sliced, cooked Portuguese sausage or even pan-fried firm tofu for a different protein. If you don't have mirin, a pinch of sugar dissolved in soy sauce can offer a similar sweetness. For an extra kick, a dash of sriracha or gochujang could be mixed into the Spam glaze. You can also experiment with different garnishes, like furikake, for an additional layer of flavor and texture.
Serving & Context
This Spam Musubi Bake is a fantastic main dish for a casual weeknight dinner, a potluck, or a fun gathering. Serve it warm, sliced into generous squares, and watch it disappear. It pairs wonderfully with a simple green salad or some quick-pickled cucumbers.
