Super Moist Chocolate Cupcakes
Ingredients
- ¾ call-purpose flour
spooned & leveled
- ½ cunsweetened natural cocoa powder
- 1 tspespresso powder or instant espresso
- ¾ tspbaking powder
- ½ tspbaking soda
- ¼ tspsalt
- 2 largeeggs
at room temperature
- ½ cgranulated sugar
- ½ clight brown sugar
- ⅓ cvegetable or canola oil
- 2 tsppure vanilla extract
- ½ cbuttermilk
at room temperature
- chocolate buttercream and sprinkles for decorating
Directions
- 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a 12-count muffin pan with cupcake liners. Line a second pan with 2 liners—this recipe makes about 14 cupcakes. Set aside.
- 2
Whisk the flour, cocoa powder, espresso powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl until thoroughly combined. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, oil, and vanilla together until completely smooth. Pour half of the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Then half of the buttermilk. Gently whisk for a few seconds. Repeat with the remaining wet ingredients and buttermilk. Stir until *just* combined; do not overmix. The batter will be thin.
- 3
Pour or spoon the batter into the liners. Fill only halfway (this is imperative! only halfway!) to avoid spilling over the sides or sinking. Bake for 18-21 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
- 4
Frost cooled cupcakes with chocolate buttercream. You can swipe the frosting on with an icing knife or use a piping tip such as Wilton 1M. Leftover cupcakes keep well covered tightly in the refrigerator for 3 days. I recommend a cupcake carrier for storing and transporting decorated cupcakes.

About this Recipe
Dreaming of chocolate cupcakes that are so moist they practically melt in your mouth? This easy recipe for Super Moist Chocolate Cupcakes is about to become your go-to for bakery-quality treats right from your own kitchen, using simple, everyday ingredients.
Why This Recipe Works
The secret to their incredible texture and deep flavor lies in two key ingredients: natural cocoa powder and buttermilk. Natural cocoa provides a rich, complex chocolate essence without being overly sweet, while buttermilk reacts beautifully with the leavening agents to create an unbelievably tender, airy crumb that stays moist for days. This combination ensures a truly superior chocolate cupcake experience.
What to Expect
When you bake these Super Moist Chocolate Cupcakes, you can expect a supremely tender and velvety texture with an intense chocolate flavor that's both comforting and sophisticated. The recipe is designed to be straightforward, making it accessible for home cooks of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned bakers.
The deep, dark chocolate notes are wonderfully balanced, making these cupcakes an absolute delight. They are especially decadent when generously topped with their perfect partner: a luscious chocolate buttercream frosting, finished with a scattering of festive sprinkles.
Customization & Variations
While this recipe delivers best results with natural cocoa powder and buttermilk, you have a few options for customization. For the oil, feel free to use vegetable oil, canola oil, or even melted coconut oil, which can add a subtle tropical nuance. If you don't have espresso powder, the cupcakes will still be delicious, but the espresso subtly enhances the chocolate's depth—consider it a secret weapon for richer flavor.
Beyond the cupcake itself, you can get creative with toppings. While chocolate buttercream is the ultimate pairing, a classic vanilla buttercream, a tangy cream cheese frosting, or even a simple ganache would also be wonderful. Don't forget the sprinkles for that extra festive touch!
Serving & Context
These Super Moist Chocolate Cupcakes are perfect for celebrations, potlucks, bake sales, or simply as an indulgent treat to brighten any ordinary day. Serve them proudly, adorned with plenty of chocolate buttercream and a generous sprinkle of your favorite decorations, ready to impress.
