Dump and Bake Meatball Casserole

Dump and Bake Meatball Casserole

6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 package uncooked rotini pasta

    16 ounce

  • 1 jar marinara sauce

    24 or 25 ounce

  • 3 cups water
  • 1 package fully-cooked miniature meatballs

    14 ounce

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • Optional: Parmesan cheese and fresh chopped herbs

such as basil, oregano, and parsley for garnish

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

  2. 2

In a 9 x 13-inch baking dish, stir together uncooked pasta, marinara sauce, water, and meatballs. Season with salt to taste; stir. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 35 minutes.

  3. 3

Uncover; stir. At this point you should check the pasta to make sure that it is al dente (firm but just about finished cooking). If it’s still too hard, cover the dish and return to the oven until pasta is al dente. Then move on to the next step.

  4. 4

Sprinkle mozzarella over the top and bake uncovered for 5-10 more minutes (or until cheese is melted and pasta is tender).

About this Recipe

Craving a comforting, hearty meal without the kitchen fuss? This Dump and Bake Meatball Casserole is your answer, delivering rich flavors with minimal effort, perfect for busy weeknights.

Why This Casserole Works

The magic of this recipe lies in its ingenious "dump and bake" method. There's no need to pre-boil pasta or sauté ingredients; everything comes together in one dish. This not only saves you from extra cleanup but also allows the rotini to absorb all the delicious marinara and meatball flavors as it bakes, resulting in a more deeply integrated and satisfying dish.

What to Expect

Prepare for a truly comforting experience. You'll enjoy tender rotini pasta, perfectly cooked within a vibrant, savory marinara sauce. Each bite features juicy, fully-cooked miniature meatballs, all harmoniously bound by a generous, bubbling layer of melted mozzarella. The optional touch of grated Parmesan and a sprinkle of fresh chopped herbs like basil or oregano adds a wonderful aromatic lift and a fresh finish to this deeply satisfying casserole.

Customization & Variations

This recipe is incredibly forgiving and easy to adapt. Feel free to use other short pasta shapes like penne or ziti if rotini isn't on hand. To sneak in some extra vegetables, you could stir in a handful of baby spinach or finely diced bell peppers with the marinara. If you prefer a richer flavor, a blend of Italian cheeses can be used in place of, or in addition to, the mozzarella. For an extra kick, a pinch of red pepper flakes would be a welcome addition.

Serving & Context

This robust meatball casserole serves as a complete meal on its own, ideal for family dinners or a casual potluck. Pair it with a simple green salad and some crusty garlic bread to round out a truly delightful and easy culinary experience.
