About this Recipe

Craving the heartwarming, sweet flavors of traditional soul food candied yams? This baked recipe makes it incredibly easy to bring that classic comfort to your table, delivering authentic taste without fuss.

What makes these Baked Candied Yams truly special is the thoughtful blend of warm, aromatic spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and ginger—combined with both granulated and brown sugars. This dual-sugar approach, along with plenty of rich salted butter and pure vanilla extract, creates a deep, complex, and beautifully balanced sweetness. Baking ensures each yam slice becomes perfectly tender, enveloped in a glistening, buttery, caramelized glaze that is utterly irresistible.

You can expect a dish that's incredibly tender, with yams so soft they practically melt in your mouth. The sweet, buttery syrup, infused with vanilla and a fragrant medley of spices, beautifully coats every bite, offering a comforting warmth. This recipe delivers a luxurious side dish that embodies the best of soul food cuisine, perfect for a special meal without being overly complicated to prepare.

While this recipe delivers authentic flavor, feel free to slightly adjust the spices to your preference—a touch more cinnamon or a little less ginger works well. For an even deeper molasses note in your glaze, you could opt for dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar. Ensure you use pure vanilla extract for the best flavor, as imitation vanilla can significantly alter the overall taste.

These rich and sweet candied yams are a centerpiece for holiday feasts, Sunday dinners, or any occasion where you want to serve a truly comforting, traditional side dish. They pair wonderfully with savory main courses like roasted meats, adding a touch of classic Southern sweetness to your plate.
