Buttermilk Biscuits
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
plus more for dusting
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup very cold unsalted butter
cut into small cubes, 1 stick
- 1 cup cold buttermilk
plus 2 tablespoons for brushing tops
Directions
- 1
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar until combined.
- 3
Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the butter into the flour. Continue until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
- 4
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in 1 cup of the cold buttermilk. Use a fork to gently stir until the dough comes together into a shaggy mass. Do not overmix.
- 5
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently bring it together into a rough rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Fold the dough into thirds like a letter. Then, pat it back out into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle. Repeat the folding process two more times to create layers.
- 6
After the final fold, pat the dough out to 3/4 inch thickness. Using a sharp 2 1/2-inch round biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits. Place them close together on the prepared baking sheet. Gently re-roll scraps and cut out additional biscuits.
- 7
Brush the tops of the biscuits with the remaining 2 tablespoons of buttermilk. Bake for 15-17 minutes, until the tops are golden brown.
- 8
Remove the biscuits from the oven and brush the hot tops with melted butter if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!

About this Recipe
Dreaming of warm, fluffy buttermilk biscuits that taste like they came straight from a Southern kitchen? This easy recipe delivers just that, requiring only 7 simple ingredients and less than 30 minutes from start to finish. You'll be enjoying hot, buttery goodness in no time, proving that scratch-made biscuits are within everyone's reach.
Why These Biscuits Work
The magic of these buttermilk biscuits lies in their simplicity and the careful use of very cold butter and cold buttermilk. This combination creates tender, flaky layers that melt in your mouth, a hallmark of truly exceptional biscuits. The high-quality ingredients, combined with an efficient process, ensures consistent results every time, setting these apart from denser, less flavorful versions.
When you pull these easy buttermilk biscuits from the oven, expect a golden-brown exterior that hints at their crispness, giving way to an incredibly soft, tender, and airy interior. Each bite offers a rich, buttery flavor with a subtle tang from the buttermilk, perfectly balanced by a touch of sweetness. This recipe is designed to produce light, delicate biscuits that are truly a treat, making it a perfect addition to any breakfast, brunch, or dinner table.
Customization & Variations
While delicious on their own, these buttermilk biscuits can be easily adapted. For an extra savory note, consider reducing the granulated sugar slightly or adding a pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs to the dry ingredients. If you prefer a richer flavor, a touch of heavy cream brushed on top before baking can replace the extra buttermilk. Don't have buttermilk on hand? You can create a passable substitute by adding a tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to regular milk and letting it sit for five minutes before using.
These hot, buttery biscuits are the ultimate comforting treat, perfect for a leisurely weekend breakfast, a holiday brunch, or alongside a hearty dinner. Serve them simply with your favorite jam or honey, or elevate them with sausage gravy, fried chicken, or even a dollop of fresh whipped cream and berries.
