Easy Dairy-Free French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 ccoconut
oat, or almond milk
- 2 largeeggs
room temperature
- 1 tspvanilla extract
- 1 tspground cinnamon
- 1 tbspmaple syrup
- 8slices plain white bread
- 1 tbspcoconut oil
Directions
- 1
In a large, flat bottomed bowl, whisk together the dairy-free milk, eggs, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon and maple syrup.
- 2
Warm a skillet over medium heat and add the coconut oil. Place a slice of bread into the bowl, making sure to flip it over to coat both sides thoroughly with the eggy mixture, then place it into the hot pan. You don't want to overcrowd the pan, so make sure to only cook 1 or 2 at a time.
- 3
Cook each slice until it is golden brown on both sides. This should take 2 to 3 minutes on each side.
- 4
Remove the finished French toast slices from the skillet. Soak additional bread in the egg mixture and add to the pan.
- 5
Continue cooking the French toast, dipping the bread only before cooking it, in batches.
- 6
Serve the French toast warm with fresh berries and extra maple syrup if desired.

About this Recipe
Craving that comforting, golden-brown French toast experience but need it dairy-free? This easy recipe delivers all the classic flavors you love, making a delightful breakfast or brunch without any dairy.
Why This Recipe Works
What makes this French toast truly stand out is its clever use of plant-based milks alongside eggs to achieve that perfectly custardy interior and golden crust. By swapping traditional milk for coconut, oat, or almond milk, you get a rich flavor profile that doesn't compromise on texture. It's a simple, yet effective way to cater to dietary needs without sacrificing deliciousness, proving that dairy-free can still be utterly indulgent.
What to Expect
Prepare for a treat that's both sweet and subtly spiced. Each slice of plain white bread emerges from the pan with a beautifully crisp exterior, yielding to a tender, custardy center infused with warm vanilla and cinnamon. The maple syrup in the batter lends a gentle sweetness throughout. While it's not a vegan recipe due to the eggs, it's a fantastic dairy-free option for anyone seeking that classic French toast taste and texture.
Customization & Variations
This recipe is wonderfully adaptable to your pantry. Feel free to use coconut milk, oat milk, or almond milk as specified—each offers a slightly different nuance in flavor. For an extra touch of flavor, a pinch of nutmeg alongside the cinnamon can elevate the spice profile. You can also experiment with different extracts, like almond, for a varied taste.
Serving & Context
This Easy Dairy-Free French Toast is perfect for a relaxed weekend breakfast or a special brunch gathering. Serve it warm with a drizzle of extra maple syrup and perhaps some fresh fruit for a truly satisfying meal. It’s a delightful way to start any day on a sweet note.
