Homemade Chicken and Noodles

6 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 whole cut-up fryer chicken
  • 2 whole carrots

    diced

  • 2 stalks celery

    diced

  • 1/2 whole medium onion

    diced, optional

  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp. white pepper
    more to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. ground thyme
  • 2 tsp. parsley flakes
  • 16 oz. frozen "homemade" egg noodles
  • 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour

Directions

  1. 1

Cover chicken in 4 quarts water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer for 30 minutes.

  2. 2

Remove chicken from pot with a slotted spoon. With two forks, remove as much meat from the bones as you can, slightly shredding meat in the process. Return bones to broth and simmer on low, covered, for 45 minutes.

  3. 3

Remove bones from broth with a slotted spoon, making sure to get any small bones that might have detached.

  4. 4

Add the carrots and celery (and onions, if using) to the pot, followed by the herbs and spices. Stir to combine and simmer for ten minutes to meld flavors.

  5. 5

Increase heat and add frozen egg noodles and chicken. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes.

  6. 6

Mix flour and a little water. Stir until smooth. Pour into soup, stir to combine, and simmer for another 5 minutes, or until broth thickens a bit. Test and adjust seasonings as needed.

About this Recipe

Craving the ultimate bowl of pure comfort food that tastes like a warm hug? This Homemade Chicken and Noodles recipe delivers a deeply satisfying, hearty meal that's perfect for chilly evenings or whenever you need a taste of home.

Why This Recipe Works

The secret to this incredibly comforting dish lies in building a rich, savory base from scratch. Using a whole cut-up fryer chicken ensures a deeply flavored broth that infuses every single ingredient. This method creates tender, succulent chicken and a profoundly aromatic liquid that makes all the difference.

What to Expect

Prepare for a truly heartwarming experience. You'll find generously sized pieces of tender chicken, falling off the bone, mingling with substantial frozen "homemade" egg noodles. These noodles are chewy and perfectly absorb the golden, savory broth. Diced carrots, celery, and the optional onion add a gentle sweetness and texture, while a delicate balance of salt, turmeric, white pepper, ground thyme, and parsley flakes creates an inviting aroma and a flavor profile that is both familiar and profoundly satisfying. This is a robust, full-bodied dish that nourishes both body and soul.

Customization & Variations

For an even deeper savory foundation, don't skip the diced onion. If you prefer a milder pepper note, you can adjust the white pepper to your liking. While frozen "homemade" egg noodles are key to this recipe's texture, you can experiment with other wide, substantial egg noodles if you're feeling adventurous. To make the broth thicker, you can adjust the amount of flour used.

Serving & Context

Serve this Homemade Chicken and Noodles as a complete, stand-alone meal. It’s ideal for family dinners, Sunday lunches, or any occasion that calls for ultimate comfort food.
