Directions

Meatballs:

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 400° F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

Sauté your chopped onion in a little olive oil until just translucent - 2 minutes.

  3. 3

In a large bowl combine the meatball ingredients with your hands. Form medium sized balls and place onto the baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes or until internal meatball temperature registers 160° F.

Sauce:

  1. 1

On medium high heat, melt your butter in a pan and add the flour. Continuously whisk until the rue turns brown. Slowly add and whisk in the broth and then heavy cream.

  2. 2

Next, mix in the Worcestershire and Dijon and bring everything to a boil. Lower heat to simmer and cook until your sauce thickens, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  3. 3

Add the cooked meatballs to the pan and continue to simmer for another few minutes, drizzling them with the sauce.

About this Recipe

Craving tender, flavorful meatballs drenched in a rich, creamy sauce? These Perfect Swedish Meatballs deliver that classic comfort with a balance of savory and sweet spices, making them an ideal appetizer for any gathering.

Why This Recipe Works

This recipe stands out thanks to its thoughtful combination of ingredients that build a deep, complex flavor profile. The blend of ground pork (or beef), panko breadcrumbs, and egg creates a wonderfully tender meatball, while a unique spice mix of cardamom, nutmeg, and allspice provides that signature Nordic essence. The sauce is a masterpiece of richness, combining beef broth, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire for an unbelievably smooth, savory finish.

What to Expect Prepare for a truly satisfying bite. You'll experience exceptionally tender meatballs, infused with a hint of warm, aromatic spices. Each meatball is coated in a velvety, deeply savory cream sauce that perfectly balances richness with a subtle tang from the Dijon and Worcestershire. This dish promises a comforting and sophisticated appetizer that will delight your palate and impress your guests with its authentic flavors and luxurious texture.

Customization & Variations Feel free to adapt this recipe to your preferences. The recipe explicitly allows for ground beef as an alternative to pork, giving you flexibility. For an even richer flavor, consider using a mix of both. If you're out of fresh parsley, a teaspoon of dried parsley can work in a pinch, though fresh offers a brighter note. While the spices are key, you can adjust their intensity to your liking.

Serving & Context These Perfect Swedish Meatballs shine as an appetizer, perfect for holiday parties, family gatherings, or a cozy evening in. Serve them warm with toothpicks for easy grabbing, or alongside a dollop of lingonberry jam or a sprinkle of extra fresh parsley for an elegant presentation.
