Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1 medium onion

    chopped

  • 2 large eggs

    lightly beaten

  • 1/3 cup minced fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • GRAVY
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2-3/4 cups 2% milk
  • 2 cans condensed beef consomme

    undiluted, 10-1/2 ounces each

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon each ground allspice and ground nutmeg
  • NOODLES
  • 1 package egg noodles

    16 ounces

  • 1/4 cup butter

    cubed

  • 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley

Directions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, mix together the bread crumbs (try homemade bread crumbs!), eggs, onion, parsley, salt and pepper. Add the ground beef, mixing lightly but thoroughly.

  2. 2

Use your hands to shape the mixture into 1-1/2-inch meatballs (you'll get about 36 balls total). In a large preheated skillet over medium heat, brown the meatballs in batches, turning them occasionally to get color on all sides. Once browned, remove the meatballs to a paper towel-lined platter to drain, reserving as much of their drippings in the skillet as possible. Set aside. Editor's Tip: When shaping the meatballs (or cooking any of these meatball recipes from around the world), use a gentle hand, and roll them until they just begin to hold their shape. Overworked meatballs will be tough and dry, so try to handle the meatballs as little as possible.

  3. 3

To the reserved pan drippings, stir in the flour, and cook over medium-high heat until light brown. Next, gradually whisk in the milk until a smooth sauce comes together. Add the consomme, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, allspice and nutmeg. Bring the sauce to a boil over medium-high heat, and cook, stirring, until thickened, for two minutes. Editor's Tip: For a thinner sauce, gradually add a little extra milk or consomme until the sauce reaches your desired consistency. For a thicker sauce, here's how to thicken sauce.

  4. 4

Reduce the heat to medium-low, and return the meatballs to the skillet. Cook, uncovered and stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes.

  5. 5

While the meatballs finish cooking, cook the noodles according to the package directions. Drain and toss with butter. Serve with the meatball mixture, and garnish with a sprinkle of parsley if desired. Editor's Tip: If you're up for it, here's how to make egg noodles from scratch.

About this Recipe

Transport yourself to a world of cozy comfort with these authentic Swedish Meatballs, a classic dish that promises a delightful culinary experience. This recipe delivers that beloved, restaurant-quality flavor right to your home kitchen, perfect for a comforting family meal.

What sets truly outstanding Swedish Meatballs apart is the careful balance of a tender, perfectly seasoned meatball and a rich, velvety gravy. This recipe ensures both, starting with a flavorful ground beef mixture enhanced by fresh parsley, chopped onion, and a generous touch of coarsely ground pepper. The homemade gravy, built on beef consomme, 2% milk, and a hint of Worcestershire, offers a depth of flavor and a silky texture that coats every meatball beautifully.

Prepare for a meal that offers a wonderful interplay of textures and deeply satisfying flavors. You'll encounter succulent, tender meatballs, each bite a savory blend of ground beef with subtle onion and bright, herbaceous notes from fresh parsley. These meatballs are lovingly coated in a luxuriously smooth, deeply savory gravy. The gravy’s rich character comes from condensed beef consomme and is rounded out with a touch of Worcestershire, along with optional, yet highly recommended, ground allspice and nutmeg for that signature warming spice profile. Served traditionally over tender egg noodles, generously tossed in butter and fresh parsley, this dish is the ultimate in hearty, comforting cuisine. It's a timeless classic that feels both special and wonderfully familiar, ensuring a truly contented table.

While ground beef is the star here, you could explore using a blend of ground beef and ground pork for an even richer, more complex meatball texture and flavor. For the gravy, if 2% milk isn't on hand, whole milk or even a plant-based milk can be substituted, though the richness might vary. The addition of optional ground allspice and nutmeg is crucial for capturing that classic, aromatic Swedish Meatball essence, so consider including them for the most authentic taste.

These hearty Swedish Meatballs are perfectly suited for a comforting Sunday dinner, a special gathering with loved ones, or any evening when you crave a truly satisfying, home-cooked meal. Serve them generously over the buttered egg noodles for a complete and utterly delightful dining experience.
