Crispy Onion Rings, whether baked or fried, will be a huge hit appetizer that you will want to make again and again.  The sweet onion wrapped in a crunch of perfectly crispy panko breading is just as delicious as any restaurant version, and surprisingly easy to make at home!

Ingredients

  • oil for frying
  • onions
    2 large
  • all-purpose flour
    1 ¼ c
  • baking powder
    1 tsp
  • eggs
    3 large
  • panko
    2 c
  • grated parmesan cheese
    ½ c
  • paprika
    1 tsp
  • garlic powder
    ½ tsp

Directions

  1. 1

In a medium-sized skillet add the oil for frying and fill the skillet ½ inch up the sides. Heat the oil to medium-high heat or 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. 2

Slice onions into 1/4 inch rings.

  3. 3

In a small bowl, add flour and 1 baking powder. In another bowl, whisk together 3 large eggs. In the last bowl, add panko, parmesan, paprika, and garlic powder.

  4. 4

Dip each onion ring first in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and lastly in the Panko mixture. Repeat with all of the onion rings.

  5. 5

Place onion rings in hot oil and fry until they are golden brown. Place the fried onion rings on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

To bake

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. After coating the onion rings line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until crispy and golden brown.

About this Recipe

Craving those perfectly crispy onion rings that rival your favorite restaurant's? This recipe brings the sweet onion goodness wrapped in an irresistible crunch right to your home kitchen. It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, whether you opt to bake or fry them, delivering that authentic appetizer experience everyone loves.

The magic of these onion rings lies in the combination of panko breading and grated Parmesan cheese, which creates an extra-crispy, flavorful crust that truly stands out. Unlike basic breading, the panko ensures a superior, airy crunch, while the Parmesan melts subtly into the coating, adding a savory, umami richness. This thoughtful blend of ingredients, further seasoned with aromatic paprika and garlic powder, ensures every bite delivers that satisfying crunch and rich flavor that sets it apart from bland versions.

When you bite into these homemade crispy onion rings, expect a delightful contrast: the sweet, tender onion yielding gracefully to a substantial, crunchy coating. The panko breading ensures a shatteringly crisp texture, while the Parmesan adds a subtle salty, umami note that elevates the classic flavor profile. These are surprisingly easy to master, making them perfect for a casual snack or a party appetizer where they're sure to disappear fast. You'll love how straightforward it is to achieve such a delicious, restaurant-quality result in about 30 minutes total.

For variations, feel free to experiment with the seasonings.

  • Try adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture for a subtle kick.
  • While panko is recommended for maximum crispness, you could use regular breadcrumbs for a slightly denser texture if preferred.
  • Consider different types of large onions like yellow or sweet varieties to subtly vary the underlying sweetness.

Serve these golden rings as the ultimate appetizer for game days, barbecues, or just a fun weekend treat. They’re fantastic on their own, or you can pair them with your favorite dipping sauces like ketchup, spicy aioli, or a tangy ranch dressing for an even more satisfying experience.
