Homemade Fried Onion Rings Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 Onion
sliced into 1/2? thicken slices and divided into rings
- 1/2 cup Flour
- 2 Large Eggs
- 1/2 cup Milk
- 1 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
- Vegetable Oil For Frying
Directions
- 1
You will need 3 small bowls. Place flour in one bowl, eggs and milk in a second bowl (beat them together) and then the Panko crumbs in a third bowl.
- 2
Coat the sliced onions in the flour, then in the egg mixture and then in the bread crumb mixture. Place on a separate plate until ready to fry.
- 3
Continue to do this until all of the onions have been coated.
- 4
Add oil to a small saucepan. You’ll need about 2 inches of oil. Heat on medium heat until it has reached a temperature of 375 degrees F.
- 5
Place the coated onions in the oil and fry on each side until the onions are golden brown. I cooked mine for approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
- 6
Then transfer the fried onion rings to a plate lined with a paper towel. Allow them to cool (they will be hot). You can top them with salt to keep them crisp at this time.
- 7
Then serve with your favorite dipping sauce. I served mine with ranch. Enjoy!

Why This Recipe Works: The beauty of these homestyle fried onion rings lies in their straightforward ingredients and incredibly quick preparation. With a total time of just 15 minutes from start to finish, you can achieve that sought-after diner-style crispness without any fuss. The simple yet effective combination of flour, egg, and milk creates a light base, perfectly complemented by the generous use of Panko bread crumbs, which are key to an airy, delicate crunch that sets these apart from heavier, greasier versions. Customization & Variations: While this recipe shines in its simplicity, you can easily personalize your homemade onion rings. Consider using a sweet Vidalia onion for an even milder, sweeter interior, or experiment with seasoning the flour mixture with a pinch of smoked paprika, garlic powder, or even a touch of cayenne pepper for a subtle kick. For a different texture, you could swap out some of the Panko for crushed cornflakes for an extra rustic feel. Serving & Context: These classic homemade fried onion rings are an ideal companion for backyard burgers, a hearty sandwich, or any casual meal. They also shine as a standalone appetizer, especially when paired with your favorite dipping sauce like a zesty aioli, a creamy ranch, or classic ketchup. They're a perfect way to elevate a simple meal or enjoy a quick, indulgent treat.
