About this Recipe
Craving that signature, creamy, crunchy side from your favorite fried chicken spot? This homemade KFC Coleslaw recipe brings that exact nostalgic flavor right to your kitchen. You'll love how effortlessly it captures the authentic taste you remember, perfect for any meal.
Why This Recipe Works
This recipe stands out by perfectly balancing the classic elements of a great coleslaw: a symphony of crisp, finely chopped cabbage and shredded carrot enveloped in a rich, tangy, and subtly sweet dressing. The combination of buttermilk, milk, and mayonnaise creates an incredibly creamy base, while a thoughtful blend of lemon juice, white vinegar, and sugar provides that iconic sweet-and-sour profile that makes it so irresistible. It's the harmonious blend of these simple ingredients that truly makes this copycat version sing.
What to Expect
Prepare for a delightful sensory experience with every forkful. You'll find a satisfying crunch from the generous amount of finely chopped cabbage and the vibrant shredded carrot, offering a fresh texture that contrasts beautifully with the smooth dressing. The dressing itself is a luscious, creamy concoction, boasting a bright tang from the lemon juice and vinegar, mellowed by the sweetness of sugar and the richness of mayonnaise and buttermilk. It's a consistently refreshing and flavorful side that truly tastes just like the slaw from KFC, offering that familiar comfort and deliciousness without leaving your home.
Customization & Variations
While this recipe aims for authenticity, you can easily adjust it to suit your preference. For a different texture, you could try a blend of green and red cabbage. If you prefer a milder onion flavor, use a very finely grated sweet onion instead of minced. You can also fine-tune the balance of sweet and tart by slightly adjusting the sugar, lemon juice, or white vinegar to taste after the dressing is mixed.
Serving & Context
This classic KFC Coleslaw is the quintessential companion to fried chicken, barbecued ribs, or any hearty picnic fare. It's also a fantastic addition to summer potlucks, offering a refreshing contrast to richer dishes.
