Fried Homemade Onion Rings Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 large sweet or yellow onion
sliced into 1/2-inch thick rings
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup panko bread crumbs
- Oil for frying)
(canola oil, vegetable oil, or peanut oil are our top choices
Directions
- 1
Whisk together buttermilk and egg in a shallow dish.
- 2
Whisk flour, cornstarch, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and garlic powder together in a separate shallow dish. Add breadcrumbs to a third shallow dish.
- 3
Dredge onion rings in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk mixture, then breadcrumbs. Set aside for 10-15 minutes until ready to fry. The longer sitting time allows the coating to absorb some of the liquid and get tacky, which helps prevent a lot of it from falling off while frying.
- 4
Heat 1" of oil in a large cast iron skillet or other heavy duty pot like a dutch oven to 350°F to 375°F.
- 5
Fry 3-4 onions rings at a time for 2-3 minutes without crowding the pan. Flip halfway through and only cook until the onion rings are light golden brown and crispy. Transfer fried onion rings to a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain any excess grease and repeating with remaining onion rings.

About this Recipe
Craving perfectly crisp, golden onion rings like your favorite diner makes, but fresh from your own kitchen? This easy homemade recipe delivers that satisfying crunch and savory flavor in every bite, perfect for any occasion.
Why This Recipe Works
What truly sets these homemade onion rings apart is the clever combination of ingredients that ensures an irresistible texture. The onion slices are first bathed in a buttermilk and egg mixture, which not only tenderizes the onion but also creates the ideal surface for the flavorful coating to adhere. This is followed by a dry dredge featuring panko bread crumbs, which are key to achieving that signature extra-crispy crust, alongside all-purpose flour and cornstarch for structure and an even crispier result. A thoughtful blend of smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and garlic powder infuses every ring with a deep, savory taste that complements the natural sweetness of the onion.
What to Expect
Prepare for a delightful contrast of textures and flavors. You'll bite through an incredibly crisp, golden-brown exterior, giving way to a tender, slightly sweet onion interior. The seasoning blend offers a warm, savory depth that keeps you coming back for more. These aren't just any onion rings; they're a substantial, satisfying side that feels indulgent yet is surprisingly straightforward to make at home. The process is quick, meaning you'll be enjoying hot, freshly fried rings in no time.
Customization & Variations
While this recipe is a winner as-is, feel free to get creative! To add a touch of heat, you could whisk in a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dry coating mix. If you prefer a different flavor profile, consider adding a touch of dried oregano or thyme. You can also experiment with different types of onions, though sweet or yellow onions are recommended for their balanced flavor. For an extra savory kick, a tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese could be folded into the panko mixture.
Serving & Context
These homemade onion rings are the ultimate accompaniment to almost any casual meal. They're absolutely perfect alongside juicy grilled burgers, crispy chicken, classic hot dogs, or flaky fish. Beyond just a side, try tucking them into your next burger, layering them in a sandwich, or even adding a handful to a salad for an unexpected, satisfying crunch that elevates the entire dish.
