Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich (Authentic)

Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich (Authentic)

2 servings
I was born and raised in Philadelphia and this was my favorite lunch at the luncheonettes (sandwich shops). Places throughout the rest of the Country that claim to make Philly Cheese Steaks just do not get them to taste the same, and one of the reasons is that they do not use extra-virgin olive oil. Anyone who says that Pat's and Gino's in South Philly uses Cheez Wiz, is talking about the way they make it now. The old authentic way uses Provolone Cheese. Using deli roast beef is the same as using top round sliced wafer thin or frozen Rib-Eye roast shaved on an electric slicer. If you make any changes with the ingredients or the directions, it will not be the same. Make it EXACTLY as written here.

Ingredients

  • hoagie rolls or 2 large sub rolls
    2 large
  • deli roast beef

Directions

  1. 1

Heat a griddle or a large saute pan over medium-high heat.

  2. 2

When hot, cover bottom with olive oil.

  3. 3

Add the onions and bell pepper and cook, stirring, until carmelized, which will take about 6 to 8 minutes.

  4. 4

Add the garlic, salt and pepper, and cook for about 30 seconds.

  5. 5

Then, push the mixture off to one side of the griddle.

  6. 6

Add the meat to the hot part of the griddle.

  7. 7

Cook, continuously flipping the meat over and slightly chopping the meat into slightly smaller pieces with 2 spatulas, until the meat is not pink, which should take about 2 minutes.

  8. 8

Mix the meat and the carmelized onions and bell pepper together.

  9. 9

Divide into 2 portions, and top both portions with the cheese to melt.

  10. 10

If using Italian or French bread, cut the bread in half, crosswise, and slice lengthwise to open for the 2 sandwiches.

  11. 11

Hollow out some of the soft white bread part from inside and place face down on top of the meat and cheese.

  12. 12

When the cheese is melted, and with 1 or 2 spatulas, flip the sandwiches over and add topping, such as marinara sauce or ketchup, if desired, and serve immediately.

About this Recipe

Craving the unmistakable, legendary taste of a true Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, without having to travel to the City of Brotherly Love? This authentic 20-minute recipe brings the genuine article right to your kitchen, designed to deliver that iconic flavor profile you've been searching for.

What makes this Philly Cheesesteak truly special and sets it apart is a deep understanding of its heritage. Unlike many imitators, this recipe insists on extra-virgin olive oil for grilling—a crucial element that, according to our Philadelphia-born expert, is often overlooked but essential for that authentic taste. The use of thinly sliced Provolone cheese instead of modern alternatives is another non-negotiable for traditional flavor, melding perfectly with the savory meat and soft roll.

When you bite into this sandwich, expect a symphony of textures and flavors. The incredibly tender, wafer-thin roast beef marries beautifully with the sautéed white onion and, optionally, the crisp-tender green bell pepper. The Provolone melts into a rich, creamy blanket, uniting all the ingredients within a perfectly soft hoagie or sub roll. It's a satisfyingly hearty lunch or a substantial snack that transports you straight to a classic Philadelphia luncheonette.

While the essence of this authentic Philly Cheesesteak lies in adhering to its roots, the recipe does offer a couple of choices. You can include green bell pepper for an added layer of freshness and crunch, or enjoy the sandwich without it. For a final flourish, consider topping your creation with a spoonful of marinara sauce or a squeeze of ketchup, as per your preference. To truly experience the authentic taste our Philadelphia expert intended, sticking to the specified extra virgin olive oil, Provolone cheese, and wafer-thin roast beef is key.

This robust and flavorful Philly Cheesesteak is ideal for a quick, satisfying lunch or a hearty afternoon snack. Serve it hot, straight from the grill, as the centerpiece of a simple, comforting meal.
