Recipe Scaler

Paste an ingredient list, pick the servings you need, and get every amount rewritten in measurements you can actually use: 1/3 cup instead of 0.333 cup, 1 tablespoon instead of 3 teaspoons.

Your recipe

Servings, cookies, loaves: any count works as long as both boxes use the same one.

Scaled ingredients(1 1/2x)

Paste or type an ingredient list and the scaled version appears here as you type.

How to use the recipe scaler

  1. Paste the ingredient list into the box, one ingredient per line. Bullets and blank lines are fine.
  2. Choose By servings and enter what the recipe makes and what you want, or choose By multiplier and pick 1/2x, 2x, 3x or type your own (1.5 and 2/3 both work).
  3. Read the scaled list on the right. Each changed line shows what it was, so you can check it against the original. Use Copy to paste the result into your notes or a recipe app.

How the rounding works

Multiplying a recipe produces numbers like 0.375 cup or 4.5 teaspoons that nobody measures. The scaler converts US volume amounts to the largest unit that comes out to a clean fraction: cups in halves, thirds and quarters, tablespoons in halves, and teaspoons down to 1/8. If an amount sits between measuring cups, it is written as a cup measure plus whole tablespoons. Ounces roll up to pounds, grams to kilograms and milliliters to liters once they pass a full unit.

Fractions are only used when they are honest. If a scaled amount is not within a few percent of a common fraction, you see a decimal instead, so the tool never rounds 0.3 cup up to 1/3 cup without telling you.

The conversions use US customary measures: 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and 1 cup is 16 tablespoons. For weights by ingredient, use the cups to grams converter.
